Basic English Vocabulary
Fifty years ago the average vocabulary in North America was about 25,000 words. Today, it’s about 15,000 words. Why? We can say less book reading, less meaningful talking and gamer playing. It’s also known that the brain or humans always tries to minimize the energy to store and retrieve Data by reducing words to three letter acronyms. (IBM, DOS, BTW, IMO, ICYMI, PLO, etc)
Research has shown that having a good vocabulary is the key to being more successful and helping to learn other languages. Students will need an average vocabulary of about 1000 words to be able to communicate at a basic level in any language. What are these words? Mount Knowledge provides students a pathway from these 1000 words to a 1 million words and related text with basic grammar rules to train and help you master your learning goals. For a foreign student to get into a North American university you need a good TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) mark of 600 or iBT of 80 plus. This mark is similar for IELTS (International English Language Testing System) students. This means a good English comprehension of at least 7000 words. However, a TOEFL or IELTS student or immigrant should have a MINIMUM of about 9000 words to ensure that they are able to get into most universities or immigrant to an English speaking country.
